Facts........ 1. Matthew Hooper and his wife Sarah were the parents of Ada Saunders Nee Hooper. 2. Ada is traceable through both Census records 1901/11 and birth, death and marriage entries. 3. Census 1901/11 show Ada, her mother, father and her siblings living at 28 Ernest Street. 4. Census 1891 there are no matching Matthew & Sarah Hooper BUT living at 28 Ernest St are a Matthew and Sarah GLOVER with children all with the surname GLOVER. Matching by name and birth years to those of the 1901 entry for Matthew and Sarah HOOPER. 5. Census 1881 Same as 1891 census. 6. A marriage of a Matthew Hooper & a Sarah Ann Agass can be found for 1875. 7. All children on subsequent census's to the marriage can be found with birth registrations showing the name HOOPER. 8. The Census of 1881 shows a son named Matthew GLOVER aged 8 ie born before the marriage to Sarah. Searches of marriages, births and deaths reveal that Matthew HOOPER married Mary Ann Linton in 1871 and during December 1872 Mary gave birth to a Matthew Hooper . We believe she died giving birth, there is a death entry for her in December 1871, and Matthew suffered brain damage of sorts as on the 1881 census he is flagged as "Imbecile." There is a death entry for Matthew HOOPER aged 9 in 1881. 9. We NOW conclude that Matthew actually used the name Hooper throughout his life but for some reason on 2 of the Census returns the name Glover was used and we can only speculate why. | Hooper, Matthew (I413)
